I was at Game 7 in 2003. I woke up at 5am in San Diego and decided to get a flight out with no ticket and no hotel room. It all worked out except the Cubs lost. When I was walking back to the hotel from Wrigley, I bought a "2003 NL Champions, World Series" t-shirt from a street vendor for $5. I have worn it proudly since.

However, I have decided that if the Cubs win the division, that day I will burn that shirt in my backyard and put that year fully to bed for me, finally, and look forward to a great 2007 postseason. I suggest everyone find similar personal sacrifices to make to the baseball gods.

Even worse, when the Cubs were a stone-cold lock, I put money on the Marlins to win to help jinx the Marlins...that didn't work out too well.

But really, all these discussions are moot. The curse begins and ends with the goat. Blaming other things and other people for ~100 years of failure would be like blaming someone riding a moped for global warming.

During the 2003 Series I promised my God that if he would grant the Cubs a World Series I would abstain from good beer and hard alcohol for a period of no less than 5 yrs.

My father who is 73 and listened to the 1945 World Series at school on radio (South Side), has given up Cubs loyalty fearing that he will die and never seen one in his lifetime. He rooted for the White Sox to win their world series in 2005. I don't blame him.
