[ QUOTE ]
The wild card is automatically the 4 seed regardless of record, but it cannot play a team from within its own division in the first round. So if the team with the best record and the wild card team come from the same division, the Cubs will be the 4 seed. If not, they will be the 3 seed. [/ QUOTE ] Slight correction. If the Cub's win their division and have the worst record of the divisional winners and would be the 3 seed. Also if they were to meet the wildcard team in the 2nd round of the playoffs, then the Cubs would have the homerfield advantage. This of course is what happened in 2003 when the Cubs (worse regular season record) hosted the Florida Marlins in the NLCS first game ( http://www.baseball-reference.com/po...003_NLCS.shtml ) I hate quoting Wikipedia, but I can't find primary info on mlb.com: "The division winners are seeded 1-3 based on record. The wild-card team is the 4 seed, regardless of its record. The matchup for the first round of the playoffs is usually 1 seed vs. 4 seed and 2 seed vs. 3 seed, unless the wild-card team is from the same division as the 1 seed, in which case the matchup is 1 seed vs. 3 seed and 2 seed vs. 4 seed, as teams from the same division cannot meet in the 1st round. In the first and second round of the playoffs, the better seeded team has home-field advantage, regardless of record." |
