Toughest Video Games when set on 'Difficult'

Faxanadu and Bionic Commando are two of my favorite NES games ever
Obviously I don't consider either one nearly unbeatable

Oh and I did beat Shadowgate but never Deja Vu, I loved those games

While it was frustrating and ultimately ended up not being that much fun because of it.... it was still way ahead of it's time and a very impressive piece of software for an early 8-bit NES game.

A big thing for my gamer friends and I back then was trying to get past level 2; there were something like 27 levels.

Also, there was a series of games that had a "first person book-based" setup - "Deja Vu" comes to mind, where you're a detective with amnesia in Prohibition-era Chicago. There was also one where you'd wrecked your car in front of an abandoned castle, were knocked unconscious, and awoke to find your wife missing from the passenger seat. Anyway, those [censored] were TOUGH; I found a ROM of "Deja Vu" a while back and still got stuck every time.

You can beat Deja Vu in like 5 minutes if you know the tricks. Shadowgate was not too difficult, just lengthy.

However, in Deja Vu, you kept dying until you realized you needed to eat those capsules. Haha, that probably pissed off so many people.

Conquest of the Crystal Palace for NES was tough, wasn't it?
