I would like to point out that "aw-ree" is still correct if El D turns out to be Jamaican...which would also explain the confusion.

Oh ya..... The first time I encountered the word/name "Stuyvesant" in print was while I was subbing in a 7th grade social studies class..... god i butchered that [censored]

[/ QUOTE ]

My H.S. was named after this guy and over the years, I don't think many people I've encountered have been able to pronounce the name right.

StyVESSent, Stewyvessant, it's endless.

I have yet to see someone mention "aks" for "ask", which makes me want to kill when I hear it.

"Machinations" being pronounced "maSH-in-A-shuns" rather than "mack-in-A-shuns"

Also, I hate "controversial" being pronounced "con-tro-ver-see-al" because it always seems to be pronounced that way by people I thought were pompous pricks in the first place.

chess,

I pronounce dour rhyming w/ sour.

According to Webster, that is fine.

Pronunciation: 'dur, 'dau(-&ampr

I did not know that it had another pronunciation. Pronouncing it door (Pronunciation: 'dor) is incorrect, though.

For a couple years in my 20's, I read 'indicted' just as it was spelled. I thought there was another word 'endighted' as well.

Also did awry, but the first time my Mom heard it at around 16, she set me straight.

I also pronounced the w in sword and answer when I was in grade school and first learned those words had w's in them.

I also love idiot-speak, where people butcher a term completely. A business manager at my past office said 'Due to diligence' instead of 'due diligence'.

Ahh...much like when people say: For all intensive purposes instead of for all intents and purposes.

"Intensive purposes" drives me nuts, especially when it comes from otherwise intelligent peeople. On a similar note I have heard people mistakenly say that it's a "doggy dog world".

I had the same problem with awry actually.

I also pronounced melancholy like melankoly until I was reading aloud in class in highschool and got laughed at by my teacher for it.
