I saw some guy get first place money with only 50% of the chips remaining.

It appears to be entirely possible to get more than first place money as a big stack. Makes you wonder if a denial-of-service attack or whatever could be +EV.

the way i read it (for tourneys not ITM) was that if you are very far from the money but only have 1 chip you receive your entire buyin back. but with ICM 1 chip far from the money is worth much less than that.

Yes, in that case you are correct, but you don't really have to worry about ICM corrections at that point, which is why I (wrongly) assumed you were talking about ITM. Just a straight chip chop is very close to accurate when you are far from ITM.
