Sure, in a vacuum - but like anything else (clothes you wear, whatever) the drink you order on a date says something about you to the girl.

The OP isn't really about what guys think, it's about what their date thinks, and some of the most chill, perceptive women I know will look a little askance at a guy ordering a Mai Tai on a 1st date.

Why are people so reductive? Girl not approving of drink does not equal girl dismissing you out of hand. Please see Nolan's post for a good example with a happy conclusion.

This is also not precisely what's wrong with people - it's taking into account likely behavior / perception of others when making decisions. This is being socialized. It does not advocate doing things you don't want to do.
