Slim,

I used Visine workplace every day for about 5 years (I know) and now that I have stopped my eyes are red and feel sore/unfortable every day. This has been going on for about 3 years.

I went to an opthalmologist and she determined that I had ocular rosacea, but her treatment has not helped much if at all. I am wondering if the effects of using Visine for that long makes my eyelids look as I have rosacea when it's not the case (I don't have rosacea anywhere else on my face or any allergies).

Anyway, any thoughts or ideas on where I should go from here?

[/ QUOTE ]

There are many kinds of Visine drops. If the one you were using does not contain vasoconstrictors (if it doesn't say "gets the red out") then the redness and dryness is probably not from the drops.

Since it's been a long time since you used Visine, the redness and dryness is not from it. Rosacea can have ocular manifestations before the dermatological signs appear so even though your skin is OK now it doesn;t mean you can't have OR. Also, OR can have remissions and flare ups. How long have you tried the treatment regimen from your MD and what is the regimen? WEre you prescribed antibiotic pills?

[/ QUOTE ]

Hi Slim, the Visine that I used did in fact have vasoconstrictors. I think it has one of the worst chemicals in it, oxymetazoline (not 100% sure that's what it is, I will check that to make sure later).

I have been on treatment for about 6 months. Basically I am doing warm soaks, and rubbing my eyelid margins with baby shampoo morning and night. I basically stopped with the shampoo because it seems to make things worse, but I still do the warm soaks and rub my eyelid margins. I was also put on something from the tetracycline family (might have been doxycycline) to start with but it was a short prescription.

I was also instructed to take a multivitamin and fish and flaxseed oils daily which I had already been doing, but I started experiencing dizzyness/lightheadedness so I stopped taking everything and it has gotten much better. But, now my eyes are much more sore

Do you know if there are laser treatments for this kind of condition? I know there are for facial rosacea, is there something for ocular rosacea?

Thanks slim

Chronic red , sore eyes is one of the hardest things to diagnose/treat. It's really hard for me to help you without seeing your eyes. I mean, it could anything from dry eyes, fatigue, too much computers, medication side effects etc. I seem to understand that the flax and fish oils made a difference...is that right? If so, then you might have dry eyes in which case you should use some non-preserved artificial tears and if that works well but is a nuisance, get some punctal plugs.

Hi Slim, thanks for taking the time. I searched this thread for a couple key words - my apologies if someone has presented this to you already in some other fashion.

I occasionally have a very hard to describe happening in my eyes.

It starts very simply - my most direct vision becomes almost completely impaired, but only a pin-hole of a distraction. I'll notice while reading on the computer perhaps, that the single character that I'm trying to read is no longer viewable...but all other areas are.

This pin-hole starts to grow and take on a more broken-rectangular (for the lack of a better description) shape. As it grows, it also starts to move off to one side or the other. Where now my direct vision is intact, but more and more the peripheral. From just off center and outward - only on one side - while maintaining the angular shape.

Kicker #1: it's in both eyes, in exactly the same location throughout the progression.

Kicker #2: "it" exists even when I shut both eyes -- in a strobing effect. With my eyes shut, the areas that are obscured with eyes open, are strobing white-on-black. This strobing is very hard to make out with my eyes open, but it is slightly noticeable.

This whole "event" takes no more than 20 minutes before it is at either extreme peripheral...until it simply 'falls off'.

During this time I feel completely healthy/normal in all other respects. No anxiety, no other physical symptoms.

This started about 5 years ago. It's presented very sporadically. A couple times in a month -- then maybe not again for a year.

After the first couple appearances, I did go to my family doctor. Being in both eyes & with eyes shut and open...I was concerned that it was something maybe a little 'deeper'. He really didn't offer an explanation...he just said maybe it's 'stress' or something to that effect.

While getting fitted for new contacts some time later, I tried (w/o much success I'm afraid) explaining it to the optometrist as well. He didn't have a guess either.

Any clue?

Thanks for your time.

Ps. I'm 40, fair shape, but do smoke...if that helps you.

I am shocked that neither doctor gave you the answer. It's an ocular migraine and I see patients with it every other week. Read the link below but keep in mind the visual disturbance varies from person to person. It's also completely benign.

I am 53 and just today started having some blurring of things at a distance. I have had to use reading glasses for about 5 yrs but long distance vision has been very good until today. I was diagnosed with Type2 diabetes about 6 months ago.
My question is should do you think this blurring today is more likely to be part of aging or from the diabetes?
Also, would you recommend i see a lasik doctor first or an eye doctor first (or are they the same)? Thanks in advance

[/ QUOTE ]

Blurred vision is a symptom of diabetes that can happen with changes in your blood glucose levels. With diabetes you need to see an opthamologist regularly.

Here is the ADA site for Eye Complications.

Hi Slim, great thread. I have a little eye problem that's been present for the last couple of years.

Most of the time it isn't noticeable but when I look at a bright background such as a clear sky or white piece of paper, it's evident that something is probably in my right eye. It now looks sort of like a tiny wad of black thread.

When I first noticed it a couple of years ago, I figured it was probably a scratch on my eye, as a roommate's dog poked me in that eye prior to my noticing it. Now it's become apparent that it is growing.

Any idea on what this could be? Thanks.

My eyes see slightly different colors. Really it's more saturation, or brightness, than tint, I think (but maybe it's tint too). When I wake up in the morning and look at my navy blue sheet, with one eye it's a more faded color. I don't notice it throughout the day (and I can't reproduce it right this moment), but sometimes I get so caught up comparing one eye then the other in the morning that I miss my train to work. is there a surgery for this?

If it's been the same for years, I wouldn't worry too much about it. If it's recent onset, you need to go see an eye doctor bc it can be serious. I'm not sure what to make of the fact that it only happens when you wake up. The first thing that pops into my mind is optic neuritis which causes this type of color difference and ON is often associated with multiple sclerosis.
