Maybe high in the cheese factor but 'Innocent' by Fuel:

Satan, you know where I lie
Gently I go into that good night
All our lives get complicated
Search for pleasures overrated
Never armed our souls
For what the future would hold
When we were innocent

Angels, lend me your might
Forfeit all my lives to get just one right
All those colors long since faded
All our smiles all confiscated
Never were we told
We'd be bought and sold
When we were innocent

This prayer is for me tonight
This far down that line and still ain't got it right
And while confessions not yet stated
Our next sin is contemplated
Never did we know
What the future would hold
Or that we'd be bought and sold
We were innocent

Re: the Pink Floyd Final Cut posts:

Haven't listened to it in years, but parts of that album have haunted me ever since...

The part where the man can only talk to his wife while she's asleep

and the verse:

Stepping up boldly
One put out his hand
He said, "I was just a child then
Now I'm only a man"

Christ, how depressing.

Eels - I need some sleep
Brand new - Play crack the sky (acoustic)
Rufus Wainwright - Hallelujah

All great songs but I get wrecked listening to them. Actually haven't thought of the lyrics much that'd probably just ruin the mood.

I'll give Everlast - What it's like a honorable mention just because of the lyrics, but it doesn't sound very sad at all.

[ QUOTE ]
Warren Zevon's "Keep Me In Your Heart" was part of his final CD, which he recorded just before he died of cancer. It's an incredibly sad song.
"These wheels keep turning but they're running out of steam"

[/ QUOTE ]

My choice as well. The version by Jorge Calderon and Jennifer Warnes on "Enjoy Every Sandwich" (The Songs of Warren Zevon) is even more sad than the original.

It really is tough to listen to when you think about the context in which it was written.
