The obvious answer is that this story is made up or that the professor is full of it.

How is it that you all immediately believed the premise that it it is possible to diagnose someones mental state simply by looking at a painting.

If this professor made the diagnosis first and then saw the painting, he could probably come up with something, but it is still bogus.

I realize that psycholgists use projective tests, but they aren't that simple. If some guy looks at an ink blot and says it looks like a turtle, you wouldn't conclude anything based upon that alone.

i think you guys all got it wrong. he is not saying the guy is crazy because of the painting. he is saying that he is already crazy and then he created this painting. then he is asking us to figure out his illness from the painting (although it seems to be a hoax?)

I like how a lot of the "answers" don't make the painter insane at all. Claustrophobia, fear of darkness, fear of being alone...My mom is claustrophobic and she's crazy, but she ain't insane.
