Indians 811/704/91-71
Red Sox 867/657/101-61
Yankees 968/777/97-65

Rockies First Half
ERA 4.71
Batting .277/.350/.423
Runs Scored/Allowed 428/438
Record 44-44
Pythag 43-45

Rockies Second Half
ERA 3.86
Batting .283/.358/.454
Runs Scored Allowed 432/320
Record 46-29
Pythag 48.5-26.5 (.645 winning percentage)

I don't know. It's not just 20 games. That second half Rockies team had a Pythag corresponding to a 105 win team. Could that be the real Rockies, and the first half was just a team with a bunch of young guys figuring out how to play?

You know why he kept Billy Martin on the payroll, right? It wasn't out of a kind heart and generous spirit.

That said, while I agree that Torre might not be the best manager for this team, keeping the players happy is more important. Lure those FAs back then you can make a managerial move. Instead they have pissed everyone off.

In addition to Buster Olney's article, Ed Price and Bill Madden have a little more.

Torre objected to the pay cut and the one-year deal based on his record, which includes 1,173 regular-season wins as a Yankee, second only to Joe McCarthy among managers in the club's history. But this wasn't a negotiation. After that was made clear, Torre thanked Steinbrenner and the rest of the men in the room for the opportunity to manage the team.

Everybody in the room stood up and exchanged handshakes, and Torre and Cashman shared a hug.

It all took less than an hour.

"We all want you back," Hal Steinbrenner added, "and we hope you'll accept this offer." ...

Once they got over their initial shock, everyone in the office got up and shook Torre's hand. Upon extending his hand to The Boss, Torre said: "I want to thank you for these 12 years. It's been great."

"We appreciate everything you've done for us," George Steinbrenner said. "You'll always be a Yankee."

Matsui and Taveras both missed significant time in the 1st half. Atkins was in a career-worst slump (hitting .215 as of May). Latroy Hawkins was horrible in April, and Jeff Francis was pretty bad, as well. Tulowitzki had yet to show he could hit big league pitching consistently.

Basically, what you had was a team that played great defense, wasn't hitting, wasn't really healthy at the top of the lineup, and wasn't the same club they are now.

I am not at all suggesting the Rockies are a 105 win team. But while everyone else is preoccupied with trying to prove how moronic I am, the numbers speak for themselves, and the real morons are those who don't know the first thing about the Rockies and yet presume they're a sucky luckbox team.

Truth is, they overplayed their abilities in the 2nd half, and underplayed them in the 1st.

Mondo, just because you started following baseball like a month ago, does not mean that you have any clue about anything.

Thayer, just because you've made mad mobnies at pokerz doesn't mean you know anything about me or my knowledge of baseball.

Sorry Charlie, but I've been attending professional baseball games and spring training since before you were born. In fact, I was probably still playing HS baseball before you were born, most likely.

In completely seriousness, this explains your hesitance to embrace SABR analysis.
