Re: A-Rod opts out of contract
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] 1. how can you possibly think the FO would make the mistake of going after santana? absolutely nothing points to that. [/ QUOTE ] I'm not a huge fan of how hands-on Hank Steinbrenner has been over the last two weeks, and how in the background Cashman seems to be. I know this sounds like WFAN overreaction, but I don't get a warm, fuzzy feeling from the direction of the organization. [/ QUOTE ] In the sports illustrated article that says Girardi will likely get offered the job tomorrow, it says that the Steinbrenners gave Cashman complete control. They wanted Mattingly and but they let Cashman pick Girardi. If this is true it gives me great hope for the future. Cashman in control = +EV [/ QUOTE ] considering how brutal girardi was at managing young pitchers, i'm not sure i approve of this. plus on yankee broadcasts he definitely showed he has a ton of -EV strategies. [/ QUOTE ] I was referring to the fact that Cashman was given complete control to make a decision contrary to what the 3 Steinbrenner's wanted being a +EV situation if it continues. I wasn't commenting on Girardi vs. Mattingly for manager. |

Re: A-Rod opts out of contract
[ QUOTE ]
I find it hilarious how so many are talking about how ARod is a bad deal since he will be in decline throughout his contract. Both Bonds and Aaron increased their performance towards the end of their careers and ARod is a superior player to both of them. I expect that he will be averaging at least 40 homers/year until he is 40, if not beyond. If that is whta you mean by 'decline' then maybe you are right. [/ QUOTE ] Aaron didn't so much increase his performance as he got to hit in a much better environment. 1965 a 31 year old Hank Aaron hit 32 HRs. 1966 the Braves moved from Milwaukee to Atlanta. Aaron's HRs jump to 44. 1967 he declines to 39. 1968 he declines to 29. 1969 the mound is lowered and Hank jumps back up to 44 HRs. I'm not even going to discuss Bonds, there are multiple threads on that already. |

Re: A-Rod opts out of contract
[ QUOTE ]
From the ESPN article: " Boras said during a telephone interview that Rodriguez made his choice because he was uncertain whether Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada and Andy Pettitte would return to the Yankees. Boras said it became clear that the others wouldn't make a decision by Rodriguez's deadline to opt out -- 10 days after the World Series. "Alex's decision was one based on not knowing what his closer, his catcher and one of his statured pitchers was going to do," Boras said. "He really didn't want to make any decisions until he knew what they were doing." This is a bunch of BS and had 0% impact on A-Rod's choice. [/ QUOTE ] lmao, i hope they dont expect anyone to believe that. |

Re: A-Rod opts out of contract
[ QUOTE ]
Hank Steinbrenner may be new to the baseball business, but the eldest son of George Steinbrenner knows one thing: If you don't want to be a Yankee, the Yankees don't want you. That was Steinbrenner's message to Alex Rodriguez last night after he learned that the third baseman had opted out of the final three years of his contract, electing to become a free agent before the Yankees even had a chance to offer him an extension. "It's clear he didn't want to be a Yankee," Hank Steinbrenner told the Daily News last night. "He doesn't understand the privilege of being a Yankee on a team where the owners are willing to pay $200 million to put a winning product on the field. "I don't want anybody on my team that doesn't want to be a Yankee." Rodriguez's decision means that the Texas Rangers will save almost $30 million that had been on its way to New York to help pay for the final three years of A-Rod's contract, which would have paid him $91 million over those three seasons. The vast majority of major league baseball players start declining around the age (32) A-Rod is now. Would you bet $240M+ that he's going to be a one out of a thousand exception? And one thing about Bonds, he never started weight training intensely until he was in his decline years (he was a skinny guy during most of his career). Bonds gets much stronger late in his career with weight training (and er, what some people claim is special help, wink, wink) and that can change the normal decline curve. Imagine what numbers Bonds would have put up in his 20s had he taken weight training seriously then? His performance curve would likely be more normal. A-Rod has been training with weights since day one. He's not likely to get an artificial boost from it in his late 30s. unless he finds some new way to boost his strength significantly higher. Even if he does, he's still likely to be a defensive liability during those ages, so his value still declines. If he's playing first base, he's worth no more than Giambi was. |

[/ QUOTE ] Well, to go along with the point I made above, Hank wanted Mattingly but Cashman wanted Girardi and it looks like it is going to be Girardi. Hank may make these figurehead statements but if Cashman is getting to make all of the big decisions then as a Yankee fan, I'm not really worried. Big Stein said stupid crap every year and the Yankees still won, so I'm not worried as long as Cashman keeps control. |
