Dells are pretty nice, you obviously know what you're getting, but what's annoying is the hiss you get when using headphones, the electrical high pitched noise and recently my headphone jack has become pretty f'ed.

If you don't know what I'm talking about with the first two then you've been pretty lucky.

I'm very happy with my Dell Inspiron 17" Wide Screen - which I use to drive my external high res monitor. I get 4 full tables on the monitor with no overlap, and 2 tables with very little overlap on the notebook.

I've had Dells my whole life, never had any problems. I suspect that most of the problems people have with Dells are the person's fault, not the computer's. No computer is going to stand up to what some idiots do to them.

So I am in the same boat as the OP. I will be in the market to buy a laptop soon (I have one now but it's sheitting the bed slowly).

Do IBM laptops have 1600x1200 screen resolution or better? Can you hook up a second (or 2) 21" monitors with 1600 by 1200 resolution to them?

Yes, you can get a 1600x1200 screen but they're quite expensive. (>$2,000)

I run a 14.1" 1400x1050 with dual 2001fp displays. Unforutnately, I only have one DVI so the other is VGA. It's not too bad. Also keep in mind that to get dual output you'll need a port replicator ($150).

With the optional higher resolution screen, my 17" widescreen Dell (9300 model) fits 4 tables with no overlap and a little room left on the side. Be sure to add the optional high-res screen when you buy one.
