You said, quite accurately, that anorexics are not rational. Why then, do you think that being blunt and mean about her being too skinny will have a normalizing effect on her body image? Are you assuming that no one has commented to her yet about either her failure to eat or her weight loss?

I spent some time working on the IT for a eating disorders dept. What I learnt from sitting in case meetings (at the request of the head consultant, who wanted the IT systems to fit in best with clinical practice) was that anorexics need professional help to get better. Encourage her to seek help, for her sake.

Telling an anorexic she's beautiful only adds to the problem in my opinion. They are not rational. You're much better off saying "Jesus, how bony do you want to get?"

People are too gentle with anorexics. You have to be blunt.

Diebitter is right - anorexics are mentally ill. They are some of the most challenging psychiatric patients to treat. This is not going to go away. Telling her she is beautiful will not help. Telling her she is ugly and bony will not help. She needs a doctor. Even that might not help, especially not very quickly.
