Your dad probably has everything he needs. Take him on a weekend trip together just the two of you (I suggest Vegas). If you cant afford this just make it a day trip somewhere you can have a good bonding experience. A ballgame or something like that. At some point have a picture taken of the two of you. When you get back have it framed and give it to him.

My dad just retired. Didn't give him crap. Phone call to congratulate him. That seemed to work just fine.
