I understand your point, although I'm not sure if I agree with it. I'll have to think about it. I can't say I have a very good concept of tax since I havent had to pay anything yet, aside from sales taxes.

Zero_333. it should not be done unless its in the private sector. If your "furthering human kind" or what ever you shold be able to sell your work to someone that wants to buy it. Not someone that is forced to

Well, the problem with having to be in the private sector is that what I'm interested in researching is generally very theoretical and may not have very many applications. That means that there probably isnt very much profit to be made from it and the private sector wouldn't be very interested. However, I do believe that advancing our knowledge in every field is very worthwhile, even if it doesn't result in money.

tax is only theft if you

-never use a road
-don't mind having your country taken over by a dictator or invaded
-never have a heart attack
-never get old or disabled and need a social worker or government aid
-never need debts wiped out by bankruptcy
-never need a dispute resolved by the court system
-don't mind eating unsafe food
-don't mind flying without air traffic controlers or with drunk pilots
-don't mind if utilities charge whatever the hell they feel like charging

beenben. Only 2 of those things really could not be done in the private sector. Some of those things i dont think should be done at all. The rest could be done in the private sector if people really wanted them.

How is it selfish? Its expanding our knowledge base. Just because you may not be able to make a lot of money with it doesnt mean it isnt worth doing.
