Not washing the sheets before putting them on your bed is the problem.

Make sure your sheets are machine washable. I mistakenly bought some high thread count sheets one time that were not.

I didn't find this out til after I washed them and they shrank/unravelled a bit. I was highly pissed off.

I have never put sheets on a bed without washing them first. Do you also wear newly bought clothes without giving them a courtesy wash first as well?

Depends on the clothing item/how desparate i am for clothing. sometimes yes, sometimes no.

Can you please elaborate? Where do you draw the line on wash/don't wash for new clothing? New jeans? New t-shirt? New socks?

I bought new sheets. They were high thread count (linens and things), and sort of cheap. Washed them right away. Really unbelievably soft. I loved them so much. Then I washed them a couple times and noticed little teeny tiny thread balls everywhere. wtf? my mom calls it pilling or something. Don't know what pilling is but I'm not happy about it. I just want really soft sheets.
