Default Re: Zogby Poll- 75 percent of americans oppose online gambling ban

Nice one primetime. Thanks for posting.

I'm actually an expert in public opinion, and don't find these results that surprising -- but I was surprised Zogby did a poll on the subject.

I will say this though: this is not a very salient issue in the public's mind. It's easy to read this poll and think that most Americans are very much against banning online gambling. The truth is most have not thought about it that much -- there are not strong attitudes about it. If a prominent politician were to come out and make a big deal about this issue then the numbers would change. What I'm trying to say is that what seems like overwhelming opposition to this bill is really malleable. If, for example, the President were to make a big deal about the bill or something, then opinion would change a lot.

People who really know polls will give less cred to some such as this, because the questions are formed in a biased way. Example:

[ QUOTE ]
Q: More than 80 percent of Americans believe that gambling is a question of personal choice that should not be interfered with by the government. Do you agree or disagree that the federal government should stop adult Americans from gambling with licensed and regulated online sportsbooks and casinos based in other countries?

[/ QUOTE ]

That part doesn't really need to be there to ask an honest question. Not saying a good majority of Americans would oppose something like this, but polls like this show bias and get less credit with those who knows what's going on.

Good eye! That is an exeptionally poorly worded question. Almost like a push poll. I would expect better of Zogby.

Off the top of my head I would frame the question this way:
"Some people think that gambling is bad for society, and causes lots of social problems, and that government should not allow it. Other people think that gambling is a personal choice and that government should not be involved in this issue. Which come closest to your position on online gambling: Do you agree or disagree that the federal government should stop adult Americans from gambling with licensed and regulated online sportsbooks and casinos based in other countries?"
