Default Bigotry against non christians?

Here is the question: What would happen if it became known that a Presidential candidate or supreme court nominee was an atheist? What would the reaction be in the press and on talk radio all across the country?

If a presidential candidate...let's say Rudy Guliani came out tomorrow and said that he was an atheist he could expect to be taking fishing trips with his pals by the next weekend. Rush/Hannity/Coulter/every religious right talking head would crush him without mercy. The left would also attack him as well for being such a lier and it would hurt the republican party as a whole. I think the same thing can be said if a major democrat came out and did the same thing.

Personally, I am an atheist and I would have a little problem with someone coming out at this point and stating they are an atheist. In that hypothetical scenario where Rudy comes out as a lifelong atheist he would basically be admitting to lying to everyone for many many years. I know all politicians lie, but this would irk me for some reason.

Of course there is the possibility that through rigorous examination of the facts he is just now changing his mind and has not, in fact, been lying for many years.

If he went into the campaign as an atheist, being fully open about it and being able to provide good answers when asked about it, I hope the American people is so up-to-date that he would have realistic chance at the presidency.

That's always a possibility. But does that happen often? I feel like I pretty much knew my entire life where I stood as far as it came to faith.

Any reasonable candidate would know that declaring that they were an atheist would be political suicide. I guess if a candidate knew that and still went ahead and announced it would be worth my admiration.
