Eh, I'd move up completely w/800 and drop down again at 650. Less aggravating/more easy to recover 6 buyins than 12 - though of course it only gives you a 3 BI buffer at nl50. Just play very tight for a while to get a feel for it - stick to premium hands and pairs and forget about SCs and Axs for a while (cept in limped multiways when your CO and button), you'll be fine.

I can tell you my experience of moving up: averaged 9ptbb for about 20k hands at NL25, started to take little shots with about 8-900 in my roll then moved up full time last month. Had a bad bad downswing, moved down again, currently rinsing and repeating, should be back up in the next week or so. It's a process, there should't be a day when you wake up and say, "today I graduate into the NL50 class".

I'd recommend playing 1-2 tables of 50 together with a lighter than usual load of NL25 tables, just to ease you in gently.

I'd also recommend that you have a full 20 BI's before you start playing nothing but NL50. It's not uncommon to hit like a 5-6 BI downswing even when playing well. If that happens and you're underrolled, you may not be left even with a full NL25 roll.

I'm sure you'll do fine, just exercise some caution.

Thank you for all of the suggestions guys! I appreciate the experiences you've shared, the advice given, and even the predictions about what I will do! I particularly liked the part about ignoring the more sensible (conservative) suggestions.

The reason I think I'll be doing some gradual play again at 50 is that I'm getting bored at 25nl and if I run even ok at 50 for a few thousand hands my bankroll will be at 1000 in no time. I do need to be disciplined though...

For now, my plan is to start sessions at 25nl and if I feel like I'm playing well to try a few tables of 50nl. My table selection is quite good and I only play 6 tables.

Thanks again for all of the great responses.

20K hands is not enough. You can easily be running very hot. Also I would want 1000-1250 before making the move.

How many hands would be enough to make an accurate statistical determination, in your opinion?

Hmm... at around a hand a minute, that's 60 hands in an hour. If you 12 table, that's around 700 hands an hour so that would take around 70 hours.

Very ignorant question I'm about to ask, but why is that considered the standard. 20k hands would be around 30 hours of 12 tabling and that seems to be a significant amount too, no?

Statistical variance. Anything can happen over 20,000 hands, and often will.

I think you are better than even money to be able to move up to NL50 now and be able to stay there using a $500 dropdown rule. You might still be bored though.

Like superkmac72 says, you might want to split up your time at first. Maybe do NL50 on the weekends at first or every other day; then do it every day if you get off to a good start, or if you become convinced that the play is hardly different from NL25 and you're comfortable.

I've played 25nl for over 20K hands at over 6.0 ptbb/100 hands. I'm at $800 in my bankroll. Does it make sense to move up to 50NL now and if my bankroll goes down to $500 then I can move down to 25NL and rebuild?

Thanks, and if you could throw some encouragement and good luck my way, that'd be great!

Move up as fast as you can.

I was playing 50nl with $500 and $100nl with $1200. YMMV but I suggest taking some shots.

If you lose move back down to 25nl, no big deal.
