Your win rate determines whether you are safely bankrolled to play a level. The 20 buy-in guess that people repeat mindlessly is overly conservative for solid winners in microstakes NL, and too aggressive for marginal winners or higher stakes players. That is because solid winners have much higher win rates in softer games.

If your win rate drops by a factor of 2, your bankroll requirements (in buy-ins) double.

Having a bankroll that would be safe for an expert does not turn you into an expert.
