The Mets have to collapse first.

Two years ago the White Sox sputterred at the end and went on to win the World Series.

Last year the Tigers sputterred into the playoffs and made it to the World Series.

While I do not doubt the Mets will gag, wait until it happens before we rate it.

If they do gag down the stretch it makes my personal top 3.

After checking, I see that the 1964 Phillies' collapse was worse. They were up 6 1/2 games with just 12 left (then lost 10 straight to finish 1 behind).

Still, this year's Mets - should the collapse continue - seemingly will rank in the top 5 of all time.

1964 Phillies is always #1

#2 in my book, second only to a Cubs collapse and a close third would be the Red Sox.

yeah, can't believe nobody has mentioned the Dodgers 51 collapse yet in such a discussion.

64 Phillies too obviously. Lose 10 straight at the end? Epic.

metsandfinsfan - where did you find your information on the 6.5 gms at Sept 12 type stuff?

Picking Sep 12th is so arbitrary.

I made a post about this topic yesterday. The Phillies win this discussion. On September 12th, the Mets had 17 games left to play while the Phillies only had 12 left when they were up 6.5 games. Also, during the Phillies 10 game losing streak they lost 7 games at home. To lose 7 games at home at the end of the season is just horrible.

I don't think there's any real doubt that the Phillies win. But I was just curious whether the Mets' collapse this year (if it happens) would even be historically notable. And it appears that it is, since it would seem to make a top 5 list, at least.
