i personally would'nt 3 bet preflop because i see A9 suited to be a hand too weak to play out of position for 3 or possibly 4 bets. you were put in a very tough spot on the flop because the person who raised could have a ton of hands. i feel you played this hand alright although it would not have been the worst thing if you had called the whole way too.

Then you could bet/fold the turn with pretty much absolute peace of mind.
