Yeah, you are very likely only playing it for set value, but so?

Donīt we need implied odds of at least around 10:1 to play for set-value? Our stack is no more than 7x the amount we have to bring in to call - and UTGīs stack is even less?

UTG will have about 14K left after you call that raise. It's a tournament and opportunities to get that 14K getting 3:1 if he infact has AA-JJ (which, based on what's up, it's a good read), yeah, I call prf.

Calling preflop is the worst of your 3 choices. Fold is the best but, if you are going to play, push! You have some fold equity because of your stack size and you won't be faced with impossible decisions post flop.

What is impossible about post flop?

Pre-flop, calling is fine. The difference between ~16k and ~18k is minimal, but the difference between ~18k and ~36k (if you hit a set and stack villian apparent big pair) is huge at this stage of the tourney and these stack sizes. Block Theory imo.

There is also a small though not insignificant portion of the time this is a poorly played AK or iso play on villian's part and he checks to you on the flop and you bet and take it down or get all-in against utg.

In short, as long as your dont lose your head and go "zomg, 9 high board over pair on flop push!" this is a very manageable hand.

alright, thanks for the input everyone - - looks like the obvious answer is fold the tens at this point, and possibly fold them preflop.

outcome of the hand.

I folded, UTG called,

UTG held AQ off

UTG+1 held AK off

At first I was pretty mad, but the turn was a K, river was a 6. After this hand, UTG+1 proceeded to raise every other hand and raise almost every flop he was involved in...
