OP was at worst slightly poor, no need for the hate. I

'm in the UK and the first places I'd start looking to build up a social network would be the local pubs. If as the OP suggests that isn't in the equation I'm guessing looking for local clubs regarding your interests is the way to go. In general pubs/bars are the easiest way though. Alcohol is a social lubricant.

Probably the best, but if he's a non-drinker or wants to involve himself with a likelier healthier group he can do group activities like pickup/league basketball or softball or something.

I'm just stalling until someone can actually be more helpful. I've never had to move anywhere.
