I had really bad acne in high school, and tried proactiv, retin-a, tetracycline, benzoyl peroxide, etc., plus various OTC meds, but nothing helped. Accutane was the only thing that worked, and it cleared me up for good. However, it's only for extreme cases, as it's like napalm for your face. Also there's been some controversy over it, as it can apparently cause depression, and some people have killed themselves after taking it.

So if it's a big enough problem for you, I'd recommend looking into accutane. However, it's expensive, and it takes a 6 month regimen, during which time you'll be extremely sensitive to sunlight and your skin will redden. Also, you'll have to have regular checkups to take blood.

Benzoyl Peroxide.

Apply it every day on problem areas, even if you don't have any pimples at that time. After a week or two you'll stop getting new ones. Trouble is if you stop using it you'll probably get new ones after a week or so.

Go to acne.org for more info.

I had moderate acne for quite some time and tried pretty much everything for it. I went on 3 courses of accutane which worked great while I was on it, but it kept coming back a couple months after I was done with it.

I started reading about how high doses of Pentothenic Acid (Vitamin B5) can do wonders for acne. I took 3000mg a day and in about 2 months my face completely cleared up. For the next 6 months I took 1000mg a day, and for the last 3 years I haven't taken it at all and I have barely had a blemish. I'm not sure if it made a difference, but I also took Omega-3 oil supplements daily when I started the B5 and still do.

Omega 3 fatty acids are found in fish and are essential to the body's skin and complexion.

May I recommend seeing a dermatologist...something low key like salicyic acid (aka Azelex cream) or some oral acne pills.

truth is it's all about oil control...if your face is oily it causes breakouts, if it's too dry the face compensates and it causes breakouts

I wonder what your diet and fluid intake is like...

are you getting enough water?
are you eating food very high in sodium?
are you exercising enough?

lots of factors play into it

Surfillini, I must disagree.

Genetics are 90% of acne.

you are correct...but external factors do play a role (a healthy diet would definitely improve the overall appearance of the body, including skin)

wierd you say that, both my parents have perfect skin and my brother and I both sufferred from acne at one point...

maybe it skips a generation

It's quite possible that it did skip a generation. I suffered from mild acne as a teenager, but it cleared up when I started college. Both my parents had mild acne as did my siblings and theirs cleared up after their teens as well.

Yes there is no doubt that it is important to be healthy and not eat too much junk food and wash your face, etc. but oily skin is not the cause of acne.

Tstone,

A couple of years ago I started the proactiv system (not just the lotion) and my face cleared up almost overnight. My friend had the same thing happen as well.

Get the whole system, with the mask stuff. That stuff is the shizit. I know it's expensive, but it really works and they'll send it automatically to you.
