To me a home game is a bunch of friends/getting together to play poker. And while I don't object to a host asking for people to bring food/drinks (like a pot luck dinner) or even asking everyone to chip in for a pizza, I think when you apply a fee to play you are leaving the realm of home game host and moving towards a business model.
So in my mind if your spending $60 on pizza and beer and ask your players to chip in towards the $60 or take turns paying if its a regular group thats Okay with me, but when the fee is associated with something else such as pot size or buy in and/or isn't capped at your actual expense for food and beverage then I don't think your running a home game. The whole idea of recoupping your costs for equipment which you own and will continue to own privately is bothersome. As to the multi-table situation. I think home game can be multiple tables, but I think as you get more tables running it may be less likely to maintain the home game atmosphere and move towards a more underground feel. |

Isn't it pretty clear this is a way to make money? This is not a "home game." As such, I think $5 at the door seems like a small price for the setup/food/etc....

Don't ask for money, just ask for donations. Once people start seeing other people giving some bucks in, they'll follow suit. You'll make enough to cover chips/table after a while. Make game BYOB, and provide light snacks like pretzels or chips. Once in a while, ask if people want to chip in for pizza or something, or like said above, do some sort of 'pot luck' dinner.

Keep in mind that in most places, the minute you start taking rake/charging fees to play above and beyond table stakes, the game becomes illegal. In a college town, the word of this "card room" will get around fast, and you will end up in trouble (not to be a downer). At the very least, do not do this in any University owned building. Just make sure you have a group of folks who want to play who are worse than you, and you'll make plenty of money.

The fee sounds fine but you should also include some sort of fake ID creation service and maybe "escorts".
Your parents will be so proud. |
