I want to see how he deals with Michael Vick before making any judgments.

[/ QUOTE ]

I like what I see so far - he didn't jump the gun and punish him, and he let the owners get a shot at punishing him. When the owners obviously stalled in doing so, Goodell stepped in. Personally I'm not happy with how the Falcons' owners handled it; they basically waited for Goodell to force their hands so the owners could wash their hands of it.

[/ QUOTE ]

???

Falcons leadership was ready to submit a petition to suspend Vick for the maximum allowable time and Goodell told them no. This has been put out in the open and not refuted by anyone.

Didn't he want a 4 game suspension? That seems absurd to me. No matter if Vick was involved or not, but from reports he was said to be a top dog, Vick owned a house where illegal dog fighting was going and if you can convince me he didn't know what was going on then more power to you.

The max teams can ask for in any situation is 4 games.

Ok makes sense, but when I watched the news conference with Arthur Blank he didn't give off a good vibe to me about the whole situation and how serious it is.

kyleb,

Yeah, I basically baited you and Mr. November into the answer I was looking for. Back to your regularly scheduled thread. I like that Goodell is being a hardass by the way, what hasn't been mentioned yet is that he's probably gaining a lot of respect from the middle-class fans that are the bulk of the NFL viewing demographic, and are probably the biggest reason the NFL is by far the most popular sports league in the US.

Yeah, I agree. Tagliabue did the same thing, imo, but he didn't have to deal with as much nonsense as Goodell is seemingly squashing.

Goodell's first step towards badass-dom was clearly his "offer" to help the Cincinnati Bengals. After he said that, everyone knew he was going to hand out the beatings. I love it.

I hate Goodell for the most part so far. He's good for the owners. Doing work they should be and handing out ridiculous suspensions. Release Pacman, Chris Henry or whoever. There is no reason for teams to do much of anything in the way of punishment because he will handle it for them. I think a few of his suspensions have been unwarranted--Odell Thurman suspended ANOTHER year... for what? WTF? Vick hasn't done anything worthy of the league office dismissing him yet. I imagine he and the team would have worked something out. Goodell is out of line IMO.

Selig and Stern are prob worse FWIW.

The problem is that the owners have proved they don't want to handle it themselves. See also: Cincinnati.

This is because he hitched his wagon, both on the field and PR-wise, to Mr. Mexico when Blank purchased the team. Now he's stuck because of all the $ he sunk into that business model, which now is for all intents and purposes dead and buried.

Roger Goodell would make Stalin proud..

Seriusly, this guy is all about the Benjamins and is simply ensuring that the NFL, an entity that basically prints money, does not lose its corporate sponsers. He could care less if a player slaps his wife or makes it rain in strip club.
