I wouldn't be raising the river if a 5 hits.

I had a very similar hand yesterday (hole cards, board, opponents, position, etc.). I bet the turn, had one caller and then whiffed on the river. Against a total unknown (which this opponent was) what is the typical play on the river if checked to? I bet and was wondering if that was correct...

Really? If the pot was laying 7:1, wouldn't typical opponent most likely fold more than that, making betting a better play?

Easy check imo. All you can beat here is 2 overcards/busted draws, and in some cases even bottom pair will call for 7-1. You have a free showdown by checking, and you only have fold equity over hands you have beat anyway

I'm still unclear as to why checking the river after whiffing is the best play in this case; is there something in SSHE regarding this that I should re-read?

Obviously 2 overcards/busted draws won't be able to call a bet so I'm not really interested in those. It's the lowly middle pair / bottom pair hands that I'm interested in. Surely these hands are folding more than 1 time in 8; does the times they don't call make up for the times I'm called by top pair or better?

If they were going to fold, they'd have folded on the turn. They don't usually call that far just to fold their sm pair on the river for one bet.

I'd be more inclined to bet K high or Q high than A high at this point.
