Re: vegas trip el cortez/advice wanted
I can't believe you're playing 30/60 and 5/10NL and you can't afford something better than the El Cortez
I didn't understand that either. You should be able to pay for your entire trip in 4-5 days at those stakes if you are a winning player. |

Re: vegas trip el cortez/advice wanted
I am no primadonna. We've stayed at hotels I felt were fine, whereas most posters called them "dumps."
A couple weeks ago, however, we also stayed at the "overflow" part of the El Cortez (Ogden House). I have to say, it was the worst place we've ever stayed. It smelled so badly in the hall that we took deep breaths in the elevator, then held them until we got into our room (the room and the elevator didn't smell much better, lol. The "hotel" is connected by a courtyard-like parking lot to another "motel" which advertises special $19 "half-day" rates. Yes, a hooker hotel It was so atrocious that I took pictures of it to someday post a trip report on the Ogden House. I don't have them developed yet, though (our digital went wacko, so I had to use a traditional camera). Anyway, I wouldn't suggest Ogden. It makes El Cortez look like a palace. It is more along the lines of the Western, but at least at Western there is some sort of security, since it has a casino attached. Ogden doesn't even have that much. Believe me, you can stay at any of the Redneck Riveras (Budget Suites), for about the same amount. And you'll be closer to middle limit action (you won't find much of that downtown). Re: vegas trip el cortez/advice wanted
there is an extended stay or something like that S/b on LV blvd, cab each way wouldn't be more than $10, weekly rates would be like $350-$400/week
also, El Cortez is quite a haul from the strip...with no car cabs ride will add up...you're looking at about $15-20 each way depending on traffic you have to take in the entire scope of things, not just room rate but how much you'll have to eat out, you'd be better off staying in a place with a kitchen to cook your own food and maybe take a walk around at night. |

Re: vegas trip el cortez/advice wanted
Heed what others are telling you. A few years ago I stayed at the Hell Cortez for a week. Let me tell you: it is a bona fide dump. It is populated with vagrants and bums and in is located in a horrible part of town. The Smell Cortez stinks of smoke and all manner of bodily fluids. After a few days, the smell actually started to seep into my clothes, and I stunk of the El Snortez for the better part of 3 days.
Someone else mentioned that it is a bit of a hike from the Strip, and that cab fares will add to your costs. Heed this advice as well, since you will either have to cab it each way or spend an hour round trip on the bus. Trust me. It's not worth the low price. If you're hell bent on staying downtown, check out Fitzgerald's or the 4 Queens. Also see this site: http://www.cheapovegas.com |

Re: vegas trip el cortez/advice wanted
OP,
did you do a mapquest for El Cortez to Wynn to see how far it is?..do some simple math for cab fares and you'll see $30/night for a room is nothing special when your spending another $30-$40 for cab fares daily. so $85 and I'm sure you couldve stayed @ the stardust on the strip |

Re: vegas trip el cortez/advice wanted
If you can get a Stardust poker room rate for $30 a day, and you are paying the same amount at the El Cortez, then it seems like a no brainer to stay at the Stardust. Sure, you might have to play 3 hours of poker there a day, but if the El Cortez and Ogden House are as bad as everyone says, it'd definitely be worth it.
Plus, at the Stardust you'd be closer to the mid-limit action you want at the Mirage, Wynn, Bellagio, etc. While the Stardust isn't necessarily next door to those places either, it's a lot closer than downtown. |

But think of all the money he will save on Hookers!!! $20 a night vs. $300 at the Bellagio. That adds up.

Re: vegas trip el cortez/advice wanted
Edit: After re reading all replys, your best choice(assuming you are at least 25) is to rent a condo or something similiar at one month. Like the earlier response said. And then rent an el cheapo subcompact. Somthing that runs $15 a day or so.
I swear I must be missing something hear. El Cortez is hella far from the Bellagio and Wynn. Unwalkable. I guess you can spend an hour each day each way taking the Duece. I'm as big an advocate as anyone of downtown, but I seriously do not understand wanting to play the limits you will play, and staying downtown, particularly at the El Cortez. Like others have said, stay at Stardust and the poker room rate there. Easy walk to Wynn, about a 15 minute walk to Mirage, and another 15 to Bellagio. BTW, I am VERY curious to see what you are bringing as a BR for $15-30(which is where you said most of your play is). For two weeks, and I assume 10+ sessions, I guess you want a full BR, which is in the neighborhood of $9K.
