Yes. The Braves tried to have Aaron miss games on the road so he could break the record at home, and the commish (Bowie Kuhn) intervened. But like I said, just because Selig has the authority doesn't mean he'll do it.

[/ QUOTE ]

Now that I think about it, you're right. The commish has that retarded "best interest of baseball" clause.

If Bonds wants to sit out, Selig should not intervene.

The relationship is already super screwed up. But I don't think Selig should intervene. I don't see anything wrong with a team wanting to create/maintain a legacy at home.

otoh, if Selig does step in, the answer is pretty simple
Barry Bonds - day to day (back spasms)

I disagree. If Bonds doesn't play, that gives the Giants' opponents an advantage (SD and LA). Since AZ is chasing both teams, it is in baseball's best interest that teams competing for playoff spots not be given advantages of this nature, especially in such a tightly contested division. There is no reason for Bonds to sit other than wanting to break the record at home. There is no excuse for him missing all six games next week.

Sloth,

Back spasm, sore knees, etc. etc. Like pergesu said, there's a million things you can come up with for a 43 year old athlete.

While Bonds is a great player, I can't imagine the advantage that SD or LA gains is really that significant in a 3 game span relative to the entire year.

I hope as a Giants fan if he cant do it this weekend that he does it in LA. The fact that I would enjoy the HR and they would hate it would make it worth it. Plus there could be a riot or something amusing, which is always something to root for..

[/ QUOTE ]
I disagree. Steve Phillips made a great point tonight. When you see replays of Aaron's record-breaking homer, you see those two guys running down the basepath with him. Regardless of whether or not Barry himself breaking the record is good for baseball, having that moment eternally recorded as a bad moment with booing, riots, what have you, most certainly isn't.

[/ QUOTE ]

not like it's going to be replayed over and over - only for 8 or so years until a-rod breaks the record

i think it'd be really classless for people to boo (so i expect them to) - i'd do nothing.

[/ QUOTE ]

how good are you winning coinflips, Arod can't have much more than a 50% shot at hitting 760+

If SF chooses to go this route, I'm sure they can come up with something along the lines of the ailments you've mentioned. And as I said previously, Selig is a pansy commish and won't do anything about it anyway.

As for advantage to the Giants' opponents, would you rather face that line-up with or without Bonds? And if Bonds being on the bench means LA or SD picks up an extra win in the series, try telling AZ it doesn't matter when they finish one game behind the division leader at the end of the year. The D'backs have a legitimate gripe (if they choose to go that route) if Bonds sits out the week.

Obviously I wouldn't want to face Bonds. But he's only going to have 3-5 ABs a game plus he's not adding much defensively. Someone with more interest/knowledge, how many runs/how much impact does Bonds bring a single game by himself?

I hope they plan on having bonds play every game then scratch him from the line up 5 min before every game so Selig has to travel around waiting for Bonds to play.

He just turned 32 the other day and has 499 home runs. It would take a Griffey-esque string of injuries to keep him from 760.

You might want to recheck the record books. How many players have hit 260 career homeruns after the age of 32? I can think of two off the top of my head. Hand Aaron and Barry Bonds.
