Re: Favorite Reggae Artists
I cringe when I see UB40 in this thread, they blow bigtime, everything they made after 87 is not worth listening to imho. Before that they made some great music though.
Burning Spear, for a good feel of what they are all about, check out the Live in Paris 88 album. I have had the luck to see them play live 3 times in Amsterdam, and they are excellent. The early work of Aswad, Steel Pulse and Black Uhuru is also great. Both for Aswad and Black Uhuru, check out their live albums (I am a big fan of those, it has just more `soul` to it). For Steel Pulse, donīt listen to their later work that has Hip Hop mixed in, because meh. Instead, listen to Handsworth Revolution, Tribute to the Martyrs, True Democracy, Earth Crisis. Israel Vibration is also great, about any album is a safe bet, even though I have a slight preference for their older work. But....one guy is missing in this thread... "I am Eek-a-Mouse, 6 feet 6 above sea level, yeah" Some real gems by this very unorthodox artist, if you do the downloadz thing, check if you can find his discography, with the Live in Rotterdam album on it. Other albums recommended from Eek-A-Mouse are: 1981 Wa-Do-Dem (Greensleeves) 1982 Skidip! (Greensleeves) 1983 The Mouse and the Man (Greensleeves) 1983 The Assassinator (RAS Records) 1984 Mouseketeer (Greensleeves) 1984 Live at Reggae Sunsplash (Sunsplash Records) 1985 The King and I (RAS Records) 1987 The Very Best Of (Greensleeves) 1987 Mouse-A-Mania (RAS Records) 1988 Eek-A-Nomics (RAS Records) Light one up, listen to all these records and have a great day. Oh btw, somebody mentioned Culture in this thread, he is also a very safe bet. I will pointmy brother to this thread, maybe he can fill in some more. |

Re: Favorite Reggae Artists
Try Mighty Diamond, they're pretty good. Some heavy reggae and the tracks are not that different, but gets me relaxed any time.
Then you also got this reggae family: Morgan Heritage. They're good although I get bored with them after a while. Just not my style. Any Dub you can find is also good. (king Tubby) And what about Yellowman. It's no roots reggae but he sure is a character. Mayeb some Brazilian half commercial stuff, called Natiruts. Oh and guys, try to download Tribute to Bob Marley Reggae Sunsplash '81. This will absolutely blow your mind. It's a video file. Sure you'll love it. Nuff Respect all |

Re: Favorite Reggae Artists
Jimmy Cliff - one of the originals
Gregory "Cool Ruler" Isaacs (get his paean to cocaine, 'Night Nurse' if nothing else) Ernie Smith has some good uptempo stuff with clever lyrics. When Bob was the king, Dennis Brown was called 'The Crown Prince of Reggae'. His material was never quite strong enough, but his voice definitely was. |
