Most of the time you just overbet because you are playing a weak player and think they will call.

There was an article about this in the forum sometime ago.
I don't overbet as often as I used to because I don't feel people are going to call them as light as they used to. Indy, if you want to get a better feel of overbetting, play at the 33s for a few hours. That was the level I found the overbet most prevalent in my game. I think this is one of the most feel based plays, at least for HUSNG. It's not something you can look at a random HH with a few general reads and say "you should overbet there." |

It wasn't the case in the jsnipes video, but a similar situation in which i think over bets are good, is if an opponent is taking an obvious pot control line, and they are decent but a little too straight forward. I like to overbet both for value and as a bluff. This forces them out of their comfort zone a bit, and gives them probably the best chance to make a mistake.

[ QUOTE ]
I overbet pots to psychologically spin my opponent's game. I will do what I like to call "set up bets" where I overbet a pot early on in the session and show a total bluff. Then I will just play my normal game for a while. Later on in the match when I have a huge monster, I will overbet the pot and my opponent will surely remember my gross overbet bluff from earlier on in the session. This strategy is suprisingly effective. [/ QUOTE ] This is very effective and I love it. For me, I like to check raise the flop after calling a raise preflop with air and showing it. Then later I can do the same with a hand and get value out of it. I like check-raising the flop instead of waiting until the turn because it's less suspicious and it gives you more options later in the hand. |

[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] I guess this plays differently at higher levels. At .5/1 I've never seen someone call an overbet. [/ QUOTE ] I have and do call them, but with decreasing regularity these days. It's almost always the nuts or near nuts in lower stake games. [/ QUOTE ] I Agree with this. i willoften do it to portray the nuts, and i get called sometimes, and show down a terrible bluff, and it will pay off in the end when i over bet with the nuts. its not something i do againat good players. |

If I'm running hot and have been playing aggressive without any showdowns over the last few hands I will start overbetting with big hands pre and post flop. Granted I play 55's so everyone is horrible, but most players get so frustrated that they just shove over top with almost atc. That's the only time that I really use this.
