UGA & VT would be my honorable mentions.

I probably didn't do a great job in really weighing the conference power over those years but I think we can really agree that FSU & Miami had a bit of a break over the years so they made need to slide some. We can see now that it's hurting them.

If we counted the 96 NC, then UF would be #1 because they would have 2 NCs & a very good win%

I'm looking at conf win%s in my rankings:

1)Texas: 1 NC, #3 win%, very consistent
2)USC: 2 titles but 1 split and #8 win%
3)UF: 1 NC, #4 win% in maybe toughest conf
4)FSU, 1 NC, 1 NC loss, #1 conf win% but weaker conf, not very good once the conference became tougher
5)Miami, 1 NC, 1 NC loss, utter dominance but in weaker conf
6)OSU, 1 NC, 1 NC loss, consistent but weaker conf win%
7)UT, 1 NC, everyone forgets they have a better win% than any SEC team but UF
8)Oklahoma 1 NC
9)LSU 1/2 NC
10)Nebraska

Nebraska also 1/2 a NC and a NC loss. Not sure the Huskers are in the top 10 though. Only 3 conf. titles in the last 10 years. Let's just do the 90s. It looks a lot better for us.

I think sustained goodness is worse than being great for 4-5 years, decent for a few others, and bad for 1 or 2. Michigan to me, besides 1997 when they were split champs, has been the good but not great team, usually losing to either ND at the beginning of the year or OSU+bowl at the end of the year. I'd much rather be someone like USC with dominance over their rivals or Oklahoma who dominated Texas for a sustained period in the middle of the last 10 years plus BCS wins and multiple championship game appearances.

This is where it gets tough IMO, cuz I formulated my top 10 by looking at end of year rankings for the 10 years and averaging that, as a starting point. Michigan finished in the top 25 all 10 years (top 10 for 5 of those), with the 1 split NC. USC had 5 years where they finished out of the top 25, but obviously were pretty dominant for the other 5. I don't really know how ESPN will compare those, and I'm not sure which is "correct". I was confident with my Michigan pick but I can see the merits of not even having them in the top 10.

Pretty fun debate topic...

Bah. It's all about peak. Ask Michigan fans how happy they are with their very high average final ranking.

There are no merits to not having Michigan in the top 10.
