Re: how many pounds of muscle can you expect to gain?
Chad Waterbury can tell me how the CNS would add lbm and cut bf simultaneously due to a change in diet without any change in activity? I feel like I'm missing something obvious or my ignorance is greater than I imagine.

I don't think anyone made the assertion you did above. I was throwing something else random out there more or less like you did.

Will you provide a link to this article you mentioned or not?

Re: how many pounds of muscle can you expect to gain?
Its his Energy Balance article. I was speaking in jest. You can gain a modicum of weight by eating large amounts of foods with a high GI. The main thing will be that your body will crush your muscles for energy while your eating habits will force your body into creating fat (and diabetes). Probably not the best situation.
He mentions this with police officers (stereotype) who're consuming ~1500 calories a day of mostly donuts. |

Well I guess that is that claim.
How about anything supporting the other observation: [ QUOTE ] I wouldn't be surprised to see gains in LBM mostly from diet and not so much actually working out over the first few months as the majority of gains are CNS related in the beginning [/ QUOTE ] |

Re: how many pounds of muscle can you expect to gain?
shemp,
I can't corroborate more than with anecdotal evidence. But I will lay that out for you. 1) We can all pretty much agree that the vast majority of beginner gains are initially CNS gains. Most people don't start to get hooge at the very beginning. 2) Diet causes most of body composition changes. I think a significant portion of people here may not even alter their workout to change from a bulking to a cutting cycle. Thats really it. |

Re: how many pounds of muscle can you expect to gain?
Thremp.
I hate to use words and phrases that I don't truly understand, but I gather that CNS gains refers to gains in strength, not lbm-- this is the part of your earlier claims that seems odd. As for 2) fine, that doesn't imo address what you've said in this thread, but fair enough. Will you at least concede that by body composition changes you are not referring to an actual increase in lbm (or provide evidence for otherwise)? |

Re: how many pounds of muscle can you expect to gain?
shemp,
I'm completely confused now. Let me reread and review what my original thoughts were... 1) Most beginners in the very initial phases do not gain much, if any LBM. 2) Your body composition is more affected by diet than weightlifting. 3) I do not think that the original poster made gains like he thought in LBM. He likely was just fatter than he thought. I think we are in agreement and I got caught up in esoteric trivia and randomness. I was merely trying to point out that most beginners do not gain LBM significantly in their first few months and it would be errant for him to assume he gained a significant amount. |
