If they ran to first harder, wouldn't it make the fielder's hurry up a little more and possibly cause more errors, thus taking the "1 in 200" number down a bit?

[/ QUOTE ]Not really. They ones that are close enough for the fielders to feel pressured are generally getting run out anyway.

Why aren't they required to touch 2nd base when turning a double play?

Umps let players slide in hard to break up a double play. So infielders don't die every time they turn a DP they allow "phantom touches." It's a case where not enforcing one rule created another unsaid rule.

... After all, these athletes are not properly stretched if they only do 3-4 sprints over the course of 3 hours.

I remember 10 years ago, or longer, reading something about how contrary to the conventional/ intuitive wisdom of the importance of stretching, empirical studies had either found no benefit, or a mix of possible slight benefits and possible slight detriments. So wondering whether anything had changed, I just searched a little--and apparently it hasn't. (Is this a research area bound to at best go in circles like most on nutrition?)

Is the consensus on the importance of stretching still not based on anything more than "Duh! DUH! THINK ABOUT IT!!"?

The issue is not being stretched, but being warm. I think if baseball players did stuff like yoga outside of games to improve flexibility, and dynamic type stretching before every at bat/while in the field injuries would go down drastically. Isn't that the kind of thing Ichiro does? (I've never seen him play)

I have a question for all of those that are claiming that hitters do this solely to prevent injuries for the good of the team. What about the times that these guys hit a fly ball that is unclear whether it is a home run, yet they stare at it or start jogging to first. This action is much more likely to cost a base than not running out a ground ball. A really high, deep shot to the wall should be a triple a lot of the time, but they rarely get past second, and in some embarassing situations, not even that far. This is especially important because these are the types of players that can't score from second on a single. It would be a lot easier to believe the apologists on the ground-ball issue if I didn't see this all the time.

It's not that Manny Ramirez or whoever can't sprint for 90 feet. It's that one in every 500 times he does it he'll get hurt, which isn't a good risk to take for a 1 in 200 chance of an infield single.

Pot odds.

Baseball players are lazy pieces of [censored]. They sit on their asses the majority of time and rarely have to run more than 180 ft at a time. And lol about them worrying about pulling a hamstring by running to first. What kind of an athlete is worried about injuring himself by simply running in a straight line for 90 feet?
