one way to fix that problem is to fold those garbage low-pair hands preflop. nevertheless, in the situation you described above, i would probably never fold unless it was against a very passive nit.

also, sometimes i like to just call with mid set on a drawy board and then bet out / raise on a safe turn card.

Depends on board texture (flush draws?), preflop action, and many other things... and obviously players.

HOw about give me a situation and I'll go from there?

In OP's hand, I repot instantly and will push. There is a HUGE range of hands the villain CAN (and probably should, if you've been playing an aggressive game) call with... QJTx (gut shot with two pair draw), Q8xx, JT9x, even AAxx.

Bottom set on that flop I might play softer because... well, the equity is just smaller. 222xx is honestly a pretty [censored] hand that won't get you anywhere unless you turn it into 2222... but you guys know that.

some of what people are saying in this thread is right, but i still think even a lot of very good players way overplay these hands.

It's all opponent dependent, but a big thing I use is a player's AF, especially street by street if I have enough hands.

88xx is usually an easy fold on a Q84 flop when a 1.2 plays back at you. Get's trickier when the guy is ~2.6 or so

Since tons of PLO players at the mid stakes (1/2 PLO ++) will pot AAxx on any flop,

[/ QUOTE ]

This is a pretty big assumption
