Curious as to the reason for this. Did their costs actually come down, or is Sony taking a bigger financial hit by taking more of a loss per unit just to get more of a user base?

Not trying to bash the PS3 in anyway...just curious

They are likely just willing to gamble on taking the hit right now. Get as many PS3s out there as possible before Lair, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet etc. come out.

I do believe i read the Cell technology is doing real well outside of PS3 so perhaps that has made production cheaper.

They are trying to bring cost down to be more competitive. My company has some chips in there and they are pressuring us for cost down versions.

Thank God. That means I can finally go grab one. Can't wait to play NCAA on it.

Just FYI, apparently NCAA is running a lot worse on PS3 than on 360, so I'd wait for reviews to come out before rushing out to buy a new system just for the one game.

This thing can still play PS2 games right? Because if it can I might get one just because I got like 50 PS2 games.

Some. Check the compatability lists and the problems with various resolutions first.

Curious, if there hasn't been a review for it how do we know that it isn't running as well? I'm not saying your wrong it just seemed contradictory.

Not to mention I want to start watching movies in HD, and to do that with the 360 would now cost more right? Not up on all this platform stuff. But, I guess as long as Final Fantasy and the sports games/my entire PS2 library, I don't see buying a PS3 as a bad investment.

I could be wrong here, but I believe the bulk of the PS3's price is the blu-ray player. The cheapest you can get them for right now is $500 as far as I've seen. I'd expect they're taking a massive loss on each console right now.

I think their reason reason for lowering the price is to try to get out of the vicious cycle of poor console sales. Nobody wants the PS3 because there's no games for it. So nobody wants to make games for it because there's no userbase. Drop the price, get users and both problems are fixed.

NCAA is running at twice the framerate on the 360 (60 vs 30), along with a slew of other upcoming releases. As it stands right now, the PS3 is not a particularly good investment. It's expensive, has fewer games and the games that it does have tend to also be on the 360 only with better performance and/or additional features/content.

They are losing >$200 per console right now, if they drop the price they will be losing even more, although dropping the price is the only chance they have of this system catching on, otherwise it will go via the way of the sega dreamcast/saturn systems.

LOL at everyone judging the PS3's long term results based on its performance from 0 to 8 months after release. The 360 has been out for an extra year and is blurring everyone's vision.

The PS3 is going to get better and better. Recently released firmware upscales DVD's and old PS2 games, Ninja Gaiden was just released and got great reviews. Sony is not about to abandon this thing when it's only just now getting some legs under it.

Price cut was dismissed as a rumor today: http://news.com.com/Sony+has+no+plan...3-6195127.html
