I agree with at least getting the grip correct and getting them aligned in the general direction they want the ball to go.

My kid is 3 1/2, and I also got him the US Kids golf set described. I don't take him out to hit golf balls. I go out to chip in the yard, and he invariably shows up with his clubs. I stop chipping, and start letting him hit some balls at a bucket I set up in the yard. I tell him if he hits the bucket, we'll go get some ice cream / I'll clean up his room / he can have a Sprite...whatever.

I want him to look forward to practicing, and I want to introduce some level of competition early. Plus, he really enjoys these little bets and goals we set. I've got his longest shot marked, and he's still trying to beat it. As long as he's having fun, he'll keep hitting the ball, and this early, that's all I really hope for.
