I was a traveling wood salesman from 1994-1999.

Every two weeks took me from Calgary, Alberta through a loop into BC and back through Banff, Alberta, which is a resort type area, prime for hitckhiking. Seeing people traveling via hitchhiking was common, so I would often pick up people who looked like they had a destination in mind......no bag, no ride

After picking up the odd "really weird dude", (like "8 second abs" from that movie with Ben Stiller), you often would drive by the single male, but often pick up a travelling couple, or two girls (obv) and the very odd single girl. Most times the single girl was local (especially near Native Reserves) , most girls don't travel alone.

So, I only read the title of your OP and my answer is yes.

Meh, it's not interesting; I was in school at UT at the time and she was getting a ride to Austin, I thought I would chat her up and work my magic but she was a hot sorority girl who was way "too good for me" (even though she was going to ACC because she was too [censored] stupid too make into the real college) and just used me for the ride, and I shoulda just dumped her ass on the side of the road but I wanted in her panties so bad that I kept trying to play her game and work it but my game was awful and I got nothing but rejection. I've never picked up girl hitchhikers unless there's a girl in the car. Seems creepy somehow (I'm mid 20s). Plus they're usually the slutty, unwashed vag types which I don't want in my car.

I pick up the occasional guy hitchhiker if they look OK from the back.

I used to have two simple rules:

1) a hitchhiker must have belongings. If they don't, your downside is increased.

2) they should spend the first couple of minutes trying to convince you they aren't planning to kill you. Its the decent thing to do and a good way to break the ice.

Historically, females can be a bigger problem than males.

Being that now I usually have kids in the car, I'm not picking up too many hitchhikers. It did dawn on me recently that camera/phones now provide significant driver protection regarding picking up strangers.
