almost all jazz albums are done in a single day, with everyone playing live in the studio.

no musician is every just pulling something completely out of his ass. all the good musicians I know personally are playing all the time, and a by product of practice and rehearsal is tons of song ideas that they can whip out whenever they are feeling creative. getting a whole album done in 3 weeks is still quite an accomplishment. there are plenty of bands that take months and even years to put an album together. Tool is famous for long periods of time between albums. (not all of the time is spend in the studio of course.) [/ QUOTE ] basically all i was trying to say is that its my hunch that jack white is extremely creative |

Re: I just read this about the White Stripes and it mystified me
Dream Theater has done that for a lot of its recent albums. They just rent a studio for 5 months or so and jam. Once they get an idea going, they record it immediately. This way, they get the a freshness in the song. If you get the special edition of their new album (Systematic Chaos), there is a long documentary DVD of the recording process.
OTOH, Roger Waters used to write songs on tour and they would play them on tour as a way of perfecting the song before they recorded it. E.g., their Dark Side of the Moon tour featured a first set of them playing songs from Animals and Wish You Were Here (songs that none of the audience had ever heard), before a second act of them playing Dark Side in its entirety. |

Re: I just read this about the White Stripes and it mystified me
Re: the album sounding 'scratchy'
Jack White intentionally uses inferior recording equipment. It's part of his sound. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_White_Stripes The first paragrah mentions their 'low fidelity' sound. "Lo-fi is a subgenre of indie rock which uses lo-fi recording practices. The aim may be to sound authentic, rather than over-produced, although its use can also be due to the artists' financial limitations. Many lo-fi artists use inexpensive cassette tape recorders for their music. The term was coined by WFMU DJ William Berger who dedicated a half hour segment of his program to home recorded music throughout the late 80's under the name Lo-fi." Just thought i should mention that there is a reason it sounds like 'it was made in a broom closet'. He felt it was better that way, i suppose. |

Jay Z doesn't even write [censored] down! [/ QUOTE ] this was what came to mind when I started reading this thread. There was a pretty awesome thing that some hiphop magazine did, XXL probably, which was a 'making of' Notorious BIG's Life After Death, and there was a story about Jay-Z and Biggie in the studio pacing in the same room, crossing paths, both mumbling to themselves creating their verses for 'I Love The Dough' |

It's something hugely successful rock bands do to burn excess money, like cocaine.
