I've read before a 30 pound cat can kill a man -- and it was in reference to bobcats specifically. Apparently it's been done before with the cat coming out the winner. Beating this cat was a very big deal. They can bite down to the bone easily and the claws must have made the guy a bloody mess.

I can't find the link, but some guy thwarted a cougar attack by forcing the cougar to submit via a full nelson.
