1. Go to a doctor.
2. This is most likely hormonally related. Breast tenderness can occur as part of the hormonal changes involved in the cycle. It can also occur if she's started taking a new birth control pill, is pregnant or had an abortion recently. Has she had problems like this ever before? Has she started any new medications recently? 3. If there is increased redness or your girl has a fever, infection (mastitis) is possible. 4. Very small chance this could be due to her body producing excess hormone for some pathologic reason or another (yes, including cancer). Sudden lactation would make me suspicious here. Cliff notes: Most likely hormone related and will likely get better in the next week and a half. Go see a doc if it gets worse or persists longer than 2 weeks. |

[/ QUOTE ] what exactly does hormonally related mean? just a random hormonal change? i'm kind of confused about what would cause that or what it is. no birth control, abortions etc, but she did just stop smoking for the first time in about 2 years ( she's only been cigarette free for a couple days ). |

During a woman's cycle different hormones increase and decrease depending on where she's at in her cycle, cool? The hormones help control changes in the uterus and ovaries primarily, but also affect tons of other things, the breasts included. (BTW, some of these same hormones increase dramatically at the beginning of a pregnancy) That's why some women experience tender or enlarged breasts during specific parts of their menstrual cycle. For some women, this is very normal (albeit unpleasant) and very consistent month to month. For others it may be much more sporadic.
The fact that both her breasts are affected is really good news. The main thing you worry about when you think of changes in breasts is cancer. Since cancer occurs because of a number of "bad" changes in the actual cells of the breast, it almost always shows up as a specific lump or discharge in ONE breast (since it would be so unlikely that both sides could complete the necessary changes at exactly the same time). So, you would think of something outside the breast controlling the changes that you're seeing in the breasts (as that's really the only way you're gonna see identical weird changes at the same time). Hormones are the most likely culprit and since your girl is about 1 week pre-menstruation, it's even more likely as some of the hormones peak around now. |
