As MB said, Gold Coast is the closest hotel. There's also an American Extended Stay on S.Valley View which is just around the corner from the Rio.

Stay at the golden nugget (Four stars and recently remodeled), and rent a car with the money you save (its 60/night)

The Gold Coast fills up fast, since everyone has pretty much the same idea. I walked from the GC to the Rio a couple times last year (in July) and it was no picnic. I walked from the Rio to the Palms after sundown too, and it was the longest most brutal 2 block walk of my life

The shuttle from the Orleans to GC was my horse of choice last year, but it can fill up during busy times of the day and some of the shuttles don't run to the Orleans, only to the Barbary Coast. I didn't attempt to rent a car or drive, but I wouldn't go anywhere NEAR the strip if you do. GL!

Yeah, but downtown (where the Binion, Golden Nugget, and Four Queens (which I've had friends stay there and who say it's a really nice hotel) are, not so busy.

The drive is very short too, since you just go a few blocks from fremont street to the interstate, hop on, then go a few miles to where the Rio is, hop off, and leave your car with the Valet at the Rio.

Agreed, it's also nice to escaped all the near strip madness when you go back to your room to sleep at night. You save money, get a nice place, and can rent a car. Plus it's kinda cool to kill some time playing cash games at Binion's where the WSOP was orginially founded.

James, I agree 100 percent with you. Plus, Binions IMO, is still by far, the best place to play poker that I've found in Vegas.

I'm going down to Vegas the 29th of this month for almost 3 weeks, and will be staying most of time down there at the Four Queens. For my entire stay it's going to cost me less than $700 for the 12 days I will be there (it helped that I booked the room months ago as well).

I live in Denver and plan on driving down (I don't like flying, and if I can avoid it, I will).

I also have nights reserved at the Rio from July 11th to the 18th (just in case I get deep into the ME), where I got them very cheap because of my play at other Harrah's casinos over the past 6 months, and I got several of the nights for free (they were not available at the beginning of my trip).

The point is, all you really need is a clean place to sleep at night, and many placed downtown will provide that.

One thing to watch out for though, is if you plan on accessing the internet, to make sure that the hotel of choice provides it. There are several downtown that do, but many others that do not.

Plus, be forwarned, I've yet to stay in a Harrah's property, that did NOT charge 10 to 15 bucks a day for access to the internet.

Imperial Palace - it's cheap and on the strip. Then grab the aforementioned shuttles from either Harrah's or Caesar's, it worked well for me last year.

Try the Flamingo ... it is a Harrah's property and they have a free shuttle.

Download TravelAxe and check the rates. I just got a real good deal for the Flamingo for 3 nights that isn't much more than the IP.

Have rooms ever really been hard to find in Vegas?

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes, especially on weekends or when big events are in town. Why do you think there are so many monster hotel projects underway? They're not going to build them if they don't think they can sell the rooms.

Even the king of the cheap dumps, IP, is often near $300 a night on weekends. For example, they are sold out next Saturday.

GC to the Rio is like nothing. Kind of hot in July though but otherwise it's fine.
Rio to Palms is a mild hike but still not a big deal.
Rio walking to the strip totally sucks. Especially in the heat.

I rented a car the 2nd time I went to LV and drove on the strip just fine. Renting is my definite preference over shuttles and cabs.
Basically, Shuttles suck. I just don't think there's a way around this. I hate them. YMMV.
Cabs are expensive. $10 1-way just to get from Rio to the strip. Probably $15 or more 1-way from Golden Nugget to Rio or something.
Renting a car for $30/day or so is way better price-wise and convenience-wise.

I've done it both ways. One trip taking shuttles and cabs. Another trip renting a car.
I soooooo much preferred having my own car in that city and in my case it wasn't even close.

Again, your mileage may vary.

I've got a pretty sweet deal. I travel year round for work and live in Marriotts and Hertz cars. The company flies me wherever. So free airfare, hotel and rental car, and the buy-ins for Events #27 and #49 I took off the felt at the Tampa Hard Rock. The whole thing is a free roll!

I feel kinda guilty about it, actually. WAIT! I'm over it...
