Tell him to go [censored] himself. Then tell your other friends what he said and find out what they really think. Then determine if these people are actually your friends.

i went through this when i was younger with my friends, so I just stopped hanging out with that group, no big deal, it worked out because now they are all married and dont do [censored] anymore but play board games and lame crap like that. so now when we do actualyl see eachother its usually a good time, and I dont have to deal with them thinking I "abandoned" them.

tell your friends to f off - you'll hang out with them from time to time on special occasions, like on all their respective 13th birthdays.

seriously what kind of awful gossipy sewing circle friends do you have - you have to be there every time they hang out? these sound like insecure losers - what is so important that they feel like they're being snubbed?

If you break plans a lot, I can understand where they're coming from. I have a really good friend who backs out of EVERYTHING. We live in the same town, both work in NYC, etc. We make plans all the time, and for about a year, he'd cancel at the last minute about 90% of the time. It got to the point where I just couldn't even be bothered to try to plan [censored], knowing he'd just [censored] on the plans anyway.

So, all I'm saying is you should really examine whether you're as innocent as you say you are. I can't imagine he'd say something like that for no reason, or for fabricated reasons. Are you sure you're not the guy who backs out of plans constantly? Because if you're flakey, I understand why he'd say something. I would too.
