how the [censored] can there only be 4 pecks in a bushell?

Uhm... pecks are part of a bushell? We definitely didn't do anything like that in school, lol.

What do pecks and bushels even measure? Volume? Weight? Quantity?

Volume. A peck is 2 gallons. That's ~9 litres for you silly metric folk. :P
