I think a big distinction is that the dogs are raised and trained for fighting. Their whole life is catered to eventual suffering and most likely death. Often, even if they don't die, they end up mutilated (I think we've all seen a picture of a Pitbull after a fight) and are often mistreated. I don't know how they train the dogs, but I imagine alot of it is borderline torture....beating the dog to make him mean, poor diet, etc.

Dog's raised for fighting are basically mistreated from birth. They are typically beaten or starved in order to get them to fight. There are also "bait" dogs employed which are basically kept around for the other dogs to beat up on to feel good about themselves until the "bait" dog is mortally wounded. The dogs lead a fairly miserable existence until they are killed. The dogs are raised to provide some sort of bloodsport enjoyment to relatively ignorant people. The reason it is illegal is because it is animal cruelty. The death of the animals in question serves no purpose other than entertainment, and it is not a humane death.

Hunting is generally considered a humane death. The goal of hunting is not to make an animal suffer but to provide a quick, clean efficient kill. The animal is usually killed for food. Sometimes there is a trophy element to the kill, but generally the animal is eaten. Exceptions would be things like shooting coyotes, which is usually a form of pest removal. Deer that are shot generally are killed every bit as instantly as a cow that is butchered for the supermarket.

You might as well have asked, why is dog fighting illegal but eating beef is not. The differences between hunting and dog fighting are enormous.

Where, in the US, are they hunting dogs?

[ QUOTE ]
In the Wild
Dog fighting: animals do fight often, for turf, mating, and certain animals wrestle/"horse play" for fun.

Hunting: There are many animals that live off killing other animals. (aka hunting).

Why is one illegal and a felony in 48 states, where as one is perfectly fine?

[/ QUOTE ]

What happens in the wild is completely irrelevant in regards to someone staging a dogfight. If you think the 2 are along the same lines, you're nuts.

Do you have a statistic or are you stating that it's more for entertainment rather than the food?

A lot of my dad's friends hunt... they always eat whatever they kill. However, I doubt they go up there just for duck/deer meat.

I don't know anyone that hunts and doesn't eat the animal.

All I hear is the overpopulation of deer etc. I don't know that for fact just what I hear. Pluse some hunters eat their kill.

As far as I know not many in the US eat dog. Especially very muscular ones.

I've been hunting for 20 years. I've eaten every single duck/deer/quail/dove/hog i've ever shot. Every friend of mine that I've ever hunted with has done the same. Don't open your mouth when you have no idea what you are talking about.

The difference is the amoount of suffering that is caused to an animal not even for eating but just for gambling. A hunted animal gets shot and dies, a dog fighter lives a horrible lfie until it eventually dies. It's a disgusting act. Look at these photos and tell me that this is the same as hunting.

Dog Fights

Please note these images aren't safe for work and do not view if you have a weak stomach. I threw up the 1st time I saw this.
