don't try it live. I have a fairly nice range of hands I open with, raise, etc, and in live I've gone card dead for 4-5 hours waiting for any decent hand. If I waited for Jacks and better, I would've been card dead in many sessions for 12 full hours. You simply don't get enough hands.

If you're going to try this (and it's kind of goofy IMO but hey, to each his own), then you should mix in some random suited hand as well. Make your preflop range something like JJ+, AK, AQs, and, say, 76s and 65s. raise / 3-bet / cap everything in your range.

The mid suited connectors are going to mess with your opponents heads. Occassionally showing down a hand like 65s is going to buy you way more action than you deserve with your hand range. It also helps you take advantage of one of the greatest advantages to playing tight... being able to steal pots with weak hands.

Personally, I'd want to at least loosen up in the big blind... playing this hand range from that position is absurdly tight. If you played this way from other spots though, it probably wouldn't be too terrible.

good luck.
Eric

considering the climate at decent stakes online nowadays, the good players will eat you alive, and the shark to fish ratio nowadays is quite high. I laugh at the weak-tight players who have their little hand chart layed out in front of them as I raise with some random hand from the button and immediately put them on a hand if they decide to come along. Learn to play a wide variety of hands preflop AND postflop and you'll prosper.

When I first started playing live I played kind of similar to the OP mention of just big hands etc. I didn't play any connectors, suited or otherwise, small pairs up front and no suited Ace hands that were lower than AT etc. Pretty limited in the scope of playable hands. Looking back this was not a bad way to start out for a beginner, playing very tight until you get the hang of things and are slowly able to add a lot other hands in the mix. If one were to just play this tight all the time you might never play a hand for hours and hours, maybe even several sessions in a row. I've been card dead like this before.

I may try the way you mention. Playing very tight but then occasionally mixing it up with the low suited connectors but raising preflop with everything. I guess I figured there were many more fish online that wouldn't realize I was only playing premium hands and figured I would get paid off when I hit. I don't have much experience playing limit poker online (have played a little more live) but I figured that there would be more bad players online since anyone can sign up and play.

Online is tougher than live, at similar stakes. Plus anyone with pokertracker will figure out what your hand range is before long, if you're playing that predictably.

There may be more bad players online (though I doubt it), but the good players are playing 4 to 12+ tables at a time, so most of the seats are occupied by at least passably good players. (Good enough to take advantage of your strategy anyway.)

I misread the OP when I gave the advice about going straight by a starting hand chart. My advice was based on live play. I don't play much online, but my understanding is that the games are much tougher. If you're having trouble with starting hands, you might want to think about starting at a lower limit.

Live, there are many low-limit games that are beatable by just sticking to the charts in SSHE.

The overhead will kill you, and you will get crushed online, because so many people have PT, and you won't get any action with your big hands.

Learn to use position. Play very tight out of position and loosen up and be more aggressive in position and if you think you can get position on your opponents.
