If Bonds breaks it, it won't stand.
Arod will break it if he stays healthy

That's what they said about McGwire. That's what they said about Sosa. That's what they said about Griffey Jr.

I don't remember any serious comments about McGwire or Sosa breaking Aaron's record. They were too old and too far away. I do remember talk of Griffey doing it. Injuries obviously have hurt him.

ARod has a reasonable shot. He'll only be 30 at the start of the 2006 season and already has 429 home runs. He's hit 41+ home runs in 8 of the past 9 seasons (36 in '04). Moving to third base a couple years ago should help him stay healthier.

He should also have a shot at Aaron's all-time RBI record of 2,297. ARod is currently at 1,226.

IIRC, the 2004 bill james handbook pegged Sosa with a 22% chance to hit 800.

Depending on what you mean by batting records, HR/RBI/BB/SB are all held by non-whites. But the theory doesn't make any sense because why would he want to pass Ruth? Aaron already took HR away from "them."

Anyway, I'm sure it's his knee rather than any desire to pass Ruth but not Aaron that is motivating his decision. Also, the Giants aren't looking that good and they are absurdly old so he can't plausibly hang around for a ring.

If I was an AL contender's GM I'd offer him a 1 year, $5 million contract for 2007 where he doesn't have to report to the team until September 1st.

Wow. Is your avatar Land Tax?

That brings me back to being an extremely maladjusted 7th grader...

Josh- Not sure if I believe that considering that just about all of the batting records other than Aarons are held by white people.

[/ QUOTE ]
I wouldn't give Bonds credit for knowing the difference.

I actually believe his problem with Babe is that he's a white guy and commonly acknowledged as the best ever. He has definitely made references which indicate he holds a grudge that is racially motivated.

I predict he comes back to try for the record unless his knee is totally shot. Can you quit 10-15 hr short of the AT record?

[/ QUOTE ]

As ESPN pointed out, both Barry Sanders and Karl Malone retired while just 1 season away from their sports' respective all-time records.

Also, didn't Bonds retract that statment? I am pretty sure that he said that depending on the health of his knee, 2007 will most likely be his last year. And on the ARod topic, Griffey had more homeruns(443) through 12 seasons than Arod. Also, Griffey was on the All-Century team in 2000. Just to say how hard it is to do what Aaron, Ruth, Mays and Bonds have done. 700+ Homeruns is an incredible stat.
