The reason your river bet was called is because usually, this pot size bet will either signify the Ks/Qs looking for a call on the river by a marginal J/10/9s or maybe a misplayed 8. Most of the time though when i see a check-bet on the river when there's a 4 flush and the hand has been played this passively- mind you at a higher blind level (25/50+), id lay its a complete bluff at least 75% of the time. So the river bet here is -EV. I'd call you with any pair, let alone a low spade. Rather, how about putting a 200 bet out on the turn. You're now showing some strength and aggression here, and the villain will either raise or fold. So you're +EV on a turn bet here, and completely -EV on this pot river bet. |

[/ QUOTE ] What level do you play? I've definitely noticed this at $20 and lower (to be honest, it shocked me to find out how often people bluff at a 4 flush board. It doesn't really seem like a good bluffing spot to me, since it's so likely they'll have at least one of the suit, and call with many of them), but I'm wondering if it holds true at higher levels. Also, most people with a big spade are going to bet the draw on the turn, aren't they? Making it that much harder for the out-of-the blue river bet to be convincing? |
