What is it about pool that a women can't compete? How big is the gap?

[/ QUOTE ]

It requires depth perception, spatial relations, and Hand/eye coordination, three things that men's brains are much better at. The gap is probably about the same as the other sports. The best female billiards player would be outside of the men's top ten, and probably the top twenty.

If the best femail billiards player would be #21 in the world on the men's tour, then the gap is far closer than almost any other sport, right?

I'd think so. Also, if a women was #21, then I'd think you could argue that there's no difference between genders, assuming many more men play pool.

The highest rated female in chess is around #8 of all rated chess players, so I'd so no there as well.

I don't think enough people, male or female, swim the English Channel for time to have a relevant sample.

[/ QUOTE ]

Ok. I just looked it up. There are almost 1300 verified swims since 1875. The average female time is 13:05. The average male time is 13:46! I'm sure this discrepancy has to do with just which men and women are doing this, not to mention more women doing it during the modern era when swimmers have gotten faster, but it still makes the point that they may be able to compete.

[/ QUOTE ]

That's 132 years, or less than 10 verified swims per year. I don't think that's enough people to conclude anything. Compare that to how many men and women run marathons, for example, and the men are waaay faster on average.

BTW, the answer is none, unless you can find a "sport" where physical size, strength, speed, reaction time and agility are all irrelevant.

[/ QUOTE ]

That's why I said long-distance swimming.

[/ QUOTE ]

I should have included endurance in that list, but I think strength and agility are relevant in long distance swimming too.

Did you check on the long distance swim events where there are lots of participants, like Olympic events?

Actually, the gap between the fastest man and woman swimming the channel convinces me that the point is valid for that sport. I don't know this, but I'd assume more good male swimmers have tried it than female swimmers, making the small gap even more impressive.

Oh, horse racing is one. Both female horses and female jockeys.

Auto racing as well.

Why are you looking at per year instead of the total number. I'd think 1300 is a large enough sample. FWIW 65 people swam it last year.
